  8. This text/graphics adventure puts you into the shoes of a hardboiled 1950's
  9. private eye. You are about to begin a case that will either bring you a
  10. nice fat paycheck, or death.
  11.  
  12. To begin the game, first enter CD [Directory], where [Directory] is the
  13. location of the game files. Type the command 'HM' and hit Enter. The game
  14. will then begin.
  15.  
  16. You may also start from Windows by simply clicking on the HM icon.
  17.  
  18. The game will load graphic screens periodically throughout the game.
  19. To switch back to text mode press the Space Bar.
  20.  
  21. This game has a reasonably flexible parser and should accept short sentences
  22. in the Verb-Noun format. Adjectives, pronouns and prepositions are also
  23. allowed. If a certain command doesn't work, try experimenting.  You may use
  24. normal english sentences, such as:

  26.  Take the gun and the bullets.
  27.  Open the desk drawer and look inside it.
  28.  Take everything.
  29.  
  30. When interacting with characters in the game, there are a number of
  31. specific commands you may use. To speak with a character, you may:
  32.  
  33. Talk to <character>
  34. Ask <character> about <object>
  35.  
  36. You may also give or show objects to characters. The correct syntax for
  37. these commands would be:
  38.  
  39. Give <object> to <character>
  40. Show <object> to <character>
  41.  
  42. These are just a couple of examples, but it will give you the right idea
  43. for interacting with people in the game. Again, if something doesn't seem
  44. to work, (and you think it should), try experimenting with different commands.

  46. To travel about, use the directional commands, N, S, E, W, Up and Down.
  47. You may need to use objects to travel in certain situations. The Inventory
  48. command will show all the items currently in your possession.
  49.  
  50. In order to save your current game position, use the Save command. Restore will
  51. load your saved games. To exit a game, simply use the quit command.
  52.  
  53. Other useful commands and shortcuts are:
  54. Graphics <on/off>  : will turn the graphics in the game on or off.
  55. Noises <on/off>    : will turn the sound effects on or off.
  56.  
  57. (Default for both is on)

  59. X <object> :Examine object
  60. L : Look (will repeat room description)
  61. I : Inventory (will display current player inventory)
  62.  
  63. It may be useful to save your position in the game while playing, (in case
  64. you get killed or stuck). I tried to make the puzzles easy enough
  65. for beginning players, but if you are stuck, simply try to use common sense
  66. and logic. Hope you have fun.

  68. So long as all the program files in this game are left intact, this game
  69. may be freely distributed and included on CD-ROMS and online sites.
